Burglars will always go for the easiest target. So make your home more secure by making it difficult for them to enter.

On the Outside

  • Install reflective address number in a visible location on the front and back of your house. This makes it easy for emergency personnel to locate your home
  • Prune bushes away from first floor windows and doors and cut tree limbs away from second story windows
  • If possible, plant thorny bushes below windows
  • A neat idea is to install gravel paths near bedroom windows to alert you to a prowler
  • Consider a fence, with thorny bushes planted at the base or thorny vines trained to climb up

On the Inside

  • Keep gates locked with weather-resistant padlocks
  • Lock all exterior windows
  • In addition to traditional window locks, use window blocks to lock windows from opening when windows are not in use
  • Install shatterproof glass or apply security film to glass panes in windows and doors
  • Install and use deadbolt locks on all exterior entrance doors. Remember that double deadbolt locks are good only if the location of the key is known. These type of locks can also be dangerous if not used properly.
  • Use pin locks to secure sliding glass doors
  • Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor, not hidden in your garden! Burglars know where the best hiding places are

Secure Your Valuables

  • Compile an inventory of your family’s possessions room-by-room. Photograph, video tape or describe all valuables, record model and serial numbers, note the date purchased and estimate replacement values.
  • Keep important valuables in a safe deposit box or home safe. Put seldom-worn jewelry, stamp and coin collections, stock certificates, bonds, deeds, wills, passports, and other important documents in this box or safe
  • Engrave your driver’s license number on all valuable items. Doing so will enable police to quickly locate you as the rightful owner.
