- Make sure your child knows where to find phone numbers for you (including cell-phone numbers), a nearby relative, a trusted neighbor, and 911. Post them in a well know locations or perhaps on your phone’s speed dial.
- Consider getting a Titan Security Solutions system with pager service so, you’ll know when your child arrives home.
- Rehearse emergency procedures periodically.
- Set safety rules for your children when they’re home alone, such as:
- Locking the front door after entering
- Call mom, dad, a relative or a neighbor when you arrive home
- Stay inside the house and don’t play outside
- Don’t answer the door
- Don’t have friends over
- Don’t cook or use the stove without adult supervision
- Don’t tell any caller or visitor that your parents are not home. Always say that they’re busy and take a message
- Make sure you put poisons and hazardous materials out of small hands’ reach.
- Keep all medications securely locked away, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal remedies.
- Teach your children safety basics like how to safely handle hot food, stay away from dangerous substances, and how to dial 911.
