Anybody can unintentionally trip their alarm. In fact, 98% of all alarms are false. You can help reduce this staggering statistic by taking a few simple precautions:

Install a Titan Security System with ADT monitoring. Ease of use is one of the major benefits of the system. Built in alarms let you know if your system was not set correctly or has been activated allowing you an opportunity to correct the situation and avoid a false alarm call.

Regularly test your system to make sure that it’s functioning properly and you are arming it correctly. To test your alarm, contact the ADT call center at 1-800-369-0996, tell them you want to test your system, and a representative will guide you from there.

Be wary of things that can trigger motion sensors, such as helium-filled balloons or automatic space heaters (if they come on, the heat can set off the alarm). If you have pets, ask about our line of pet shielded motion sensors.

Ensure that everyone who uses the system knows the access code and password. This includes children, hired help, guests, as well as office staff and cleaners. The sooner an accidental alarm is disarmed, the quicker ADT will know it was false.

If a false alarm happens, stay off the phone and wait for an ADT representative to call you. If you’re on the other line or we cannot reach you and will therefore automatically dispatch the authorities.

Please note: Most local authorities require alarm users to have a permit. This helps them verify that a licensed company has installed and is monitoring your alarm system. Call your local authorities to determine if you need a permit, or to renew it if yours has expired.

Beware: Because of the high incidence of false alarms, some municipalities have introduced fines for false alarms. Some municipalities allow a given number of false alarms per year and then begin to fine per alarm after that number has been reached. Reduce the possibility of accidentally setting off your alarm and avoid a fine. Call your local police department to verify if your community has fines.

Monitoring
Q. Is monitoring of my security system done by a local monitoring center?

A. No, while this may seem to be advantageous in some ways, monitoring by a single center is actually less desirable. Should a component of the single monitoring center fail, it is possible your home or business would not be protected.

ADT Monitoring is done by a network of five different ADT monitoring centers spread across the United States. Monitoring handled in this manner assures your home or business is continuously monitored by leveraging multiple resources.

Q. What happens when my alarm is activated?

A. Your system is directly connected to ADT’s monitoring center. When they receive the emergency signal they contact the location sending the signal and the first person designated on the contact list. If they confirm an emergency or cannot verify the alarm, they contact the appropriate emergency authority (police, fire, or medical). After dispatching, ADT continues to try and reach you or someone on your contact list.

Q. What can I do about false alarms?

A. You should make sure that family members, employees, and others accessing the system know how to use it properly and how to avoid causing false alarms. Sometimes false alarms are caused by severe weather, faulty building construction, or other forces that no one can control. Find out how to prevent false alarms or call us at one of the below listed numbers if you have further questions.

Installation
Q. Are there any benefits to having my house already pre-wired for a security system?

A. Yes! If your home is pre-wired for a security system by anyone, Titan Security Solutions will install a security system for $99 and arm every door and window. This is a significant savings!

Q. Couldn’t I just buy a smoke detector at the local home center?

A. Sure you could. However, most retail smoke detectors only detect the presence of smoke. Titan Security Solutions uses DSC smoke/heat detectors which not only detect the presence of smoke but also the presence of heat.

Install a Titan Security Solutions security system!

Light up your home with well-placed, effective lighting and make it easier to spot unwelcome visitors. In addition, trim hedges, foliage, and trees that create dark corners and hiding spots.

Never leave a spare key hidden outside (burglars know all the best places).

A house that appears lived-in deters burglars: keep the TV or radio on when you are out, and use timers to operate your lights in key areas of the house.

Install deadbolt locks on all exterior entrances and shatterproof glass on windows. Remember if you use double deadbolt locks, the location of the key must be know to all. These are high security locks but, can be dangerous if not used properly.

Secure upstairs windows and doors that are accessible from the outside. Put in bars, extra locks, more sensors.

Make sure your smoke detectors are working and up to code.

Install peepholes so you can screen your visitors before opening the door. Ask to see identification from service and delivery people before letting them in. Do not allow unknown people to come into your home to use your phone. If possible, take the phone out to them or refer them to the nearest pay phone.

Review your answering machine message. Make sure it doesn’t imply that you’re not home.

Report suspicious behavior. Police do not feel bothered by this. They encourage reporting as it often deters or uncovers crime.

Fire Safety in Your Home

Avoid overloading electrical outlets or extension cords

Inspect electrical cords and replace worn or broken ones

Repair broken appliances

Store flammable liquid in a secure spot outside your home

Install and maintain smoke detectors

Keep fire extinguishers handy, especially in the kitchen

Put a collapsible ladder on the upper floor

Designate fire escape routes, practice fire drills, and make sure your family has a designated meeting place outside

Consider installing an ADT monitored heat and smoke detectors

Brushfire Safety

If you live in an area that could experience brushfires, minimize the risk to your home by:

clearing leaves and debris from guttering

trimming trees that may overhang your home

keeping your yard neat and clear of rubbish

installing a sprinkler system for your garden

If a fire does threaten your home and you cannot evacuate, saturate the garden, walls, and roof with water, shut all doors and windows, and keep wool blankets and supplies handy

If you become trapped in your car during a brushfire, stop in a clearing if possible. Do not leave your car! Huddle down on the back-seat floor and cover yourself with a blanket. Wait until the fire passes before proceeding

Fire Escape Planning
There is often very little time between the detection of a fire and the time it becomes deadly. It is thus very important that a family escape plan be developed and rehearsed.

Every family member should participate in developing the escape plan.

Study the possible escape routes from each location within the house. Since many fires occur at night, special attention should be given to the escape routes from sleeping quarters.

Escape from a bedroom must be possible without opening the interior door. Consider the following when making your escape plans:

Make sure that all perimeter doors and windows are easily opened. Ensure that they are not painted shut, and that their locking mechanisms operate smoothly.

If opening or using the exit is too difficult for children, the elderly or handicapped, plans for rescue should be developed. This includes making sure that those who are to perform the rescue can promptly hear the fire warning signal.

If the exit is above the ground level, an approved fire ladder or rope should be provided as well as training in its use.

Exits on the ground level should be kept clear. Be sure to remove snow from exterior patio doors in winter; outdoor furniture or equipment should not block exits.

Each person should know of a predetermined assembly point where everyone can be accounted for i.e.: across the street or at a neighbor’s house. Once everyone is out of the building, call the Fire Department.

A good plan emphasizes quick escape. Do not investigate or attempt to fight the fire, and do not gather belongings or pets as this wastes valuable time, Once outside, do not re-enter the house. Wait for the fire department.

Write the fire escape plan down and rehearse it frequently so that should an emergency arise, everyone will know what to do. Revise the plan as conditions change, such as the number of people in the home, or if there are changes to the building’s construction.

Make sure your fire warning system is operational by conducting weekly tests. If you are unsure about system operation, contact your installing dealer.

We recommend that you contact your local fire department and request further information on fire safety and escape planning. If available, have Your local fire prevention officer conduct an in- house fire safety inspection

Burglars will always go for the easiest target. So make your home more secure by making it difficult for them to enter.

On the Outside

Install reflective address number in a visible location on the front and back of your house. This makes it easy for emergency personnel to locate your home

Prune bushes away from first floor windows and doors and cut tree limbs away from second story windows

If possible, plant thorny bushes below windows

A neat idea is to install gravel paths near bedroom windows to alert you to a prowler

Consider a fence, with thorny bushes planted at the base or thorny vines trained to climb up

On the Inside

Keep gates locked with weather-resistant padlocks

Lock all exterior windows

In addition to traditional window locks, use window blocks to lock windows from opening when windows are not in use

Install shatterproof glass or apply security film to glass panes in windows and doors

Install and use deadbolt locks on all exterior entrance doors. Remember that double deadbolt locks are good only if the location of the key is known. These type of locks can also be dangerous if not used properly.

Use pin locks to secure sliding glass doors

Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor, not hidden in your garden! Burglars know where the best hiding places are

Secure Your Valuables

Compile an inventory of your family’s possessions room-by-room. Photograph, video tape or describe all valuables, record model and serial numbers, note the date purchased and estimate replacement values.

Keep important valuables in a safe deposit box or home safe. Put seldom-worn jewelry, stamp and coin collections, stock certificates, bonds, deeds, wills, passports, and other important documents in this box or safe

Engrave your driver’s license number on all valuable items. Doing so will enable police to quickly locate you as the rightful owner.

Make sure your child knows where to find phone numbers for you (including cell-phone numbers), a nearby relative, a trusted neighbor, and 911. Post them in a well know locations or perhaps on your phone’s speed dial.

Consider getting a Titan Security Solutions system with pager service so, you’ll know when your child arrives home.

Rehearse emergency procedures periodically.

Set safety rules for your children when they’re home alone, such as:

Locking the front door after entering

Call mom, dad, a relative or a neighbor when you arrive home

Stay inside the house and don’t play outside

Don’t answer the door

Don’t have friends over

Don’t cook or use the stove without adult supervision

Don’t tell any caller or visitor that your parents are not home. Always say that they’re busy and take a message

Make sure you put poisons and hazardous materials out of small hands’ reach.

Keep all medications securely locked away, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal remedies.

Teach your children safety basics like how to safely handle hot food, stay away from dangerous substances, and how to dial 911.
